Stepping Stones in Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)

DeAnna Stevens, AL | @collierprinbee
During this session, DeAnna Stevens, principal of Mobile County Public School, AL, will share the five tenets (or “big ideas”) of SEL used in professional developments with her staff to encourage growth mindset and regulating practices. After exploring the five tenets based on researched competencies and models, our area of need was emotional regulation. Using interactive activities, they created emotion charts and calming corners with grade level appropriate vocabulary to help students better understand and convey their emotions. Mobile AL teachers were excited to use strategies and build a safe space within their classroom. Using the Discovery Education SOS instructional strategies and Discover Your Happy for future PD sessions, these life changing practices will no doubt yield positive results. Most schools’ mottos say, “productive members of society," what better way than to teach them to manage their thinking, attention, behavior and goals for improved achievement throughout their lives?
